According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce recently, from January to August this year, my country's total import and export of services was 3,271.66 billion yuan (RMB, the same below), a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. Among them, service exports were 1,549.99 billion yuan, an increase of 25.3%; imports were 1,721.66 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.8%. The growth of service exports was 27.1 percentage points higher than that of imports, driving the service trade deficit to drop by 66.7% to 171.67 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 515.62 billion yuan.
It is worth noting that the import and export of services grew well in August. Data show that in August, my country's total import and export of services was 462.47 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 24.8% and a month-on-month increase of 7.1%. The export of services was 212.84 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 40.2% and a month-on-month increase of 1.9%, of which the export of transportation services increased by 136.8%. Service imports were 249.62 billion yuan, up 14.1% year-on-year and 11.9% month-on-month.
The person in charge of the Department of Trade in Services of the Ministry of Commerce said that from January to August this year, my country's trade in services maintained a good growth momentum. Compared with the same period in 2019, the import and export of services decreased by 8.4%, with an average decrease of 4.3% in the two years, of which exports increased by 22.6% and an average increase of 10.7% in the two years; imports decreased by 25.4% and an average decrease of 13.6% in the two years.
While the overall scale is stable and improving, the import and export structure of my country's service trade is still being optimized, and the proportion of knowledge-intensive service trade has increased. Data show that from January to August, my country's import and export of knowledge-intensive services reached 1,475.42 billion yuan, an increase of 12%, accounting for 45.1% of the total import and export of services, an increase of 1 percentage point.
Specifically, in the first eight months, my country's export of knowledge-intensive services was 803.82 billion yuan, an increase of 16%, accounting for 51.9% of the total export of services; the areas with faster export growth were personal culture and entertainment services, intellectual property royalties, telecommunications and computers. and information services, up 34.3%, 23.8%, and 20.6% respectively. The import of knowledge-intensive services was 671.6 billion yuan, an increase of 7.5%, accounting for 39% of the total import of services; the areas with faster import growth were intellectual property royalties, telecommunication computers and information services, which increased by 14.5% and 14.3% respectively.
